Bumthang is located in the heart of Bhutan and is one of the kingdom’s most attractive destinations for hiking and sightseeing. This trek can be graded as easy trek and it is best for beginners. During the trek we cross through several villages, providing an excellent opportunity to interact with the rural life of Bhutan. The trek starts from Thangbi village and ends at Tang village.

Package Itinerary

Arrival at Paro international airport - Thimphu: The flight to Paro is one of the spectacular in the entire Himalayas. Whether flying along the Himalayan range from Kathmandu or over the foothills from Kolkata, the journey offers fascinating view and an exciting descent into the kingdom. Bhutan’s gift to you as you disembark from the aircraft will be cool, clean fresh mountain air. After immigration formalities and baggage collection, you will be received by guide and driver from Fly to Bhutan. Drive 1 hour to Thimphu. After reaching Thimphu visit king’s memorial stupa (the Memorial Chorten) continuously circumambulated by people, murmuring the mantras and spinning their prayer wheels. Construction of this land mark was the idea of Bhutan’s Third king His majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck( the father of modern Bhutan) who has wish to erect monument to world peace and prosperity .Completed in 1974 after his untimely death, it serve both as a memorial to the late king and as a monument to peace

Thimphu – Bumthang: Drive to Bumthang. It takes about 8 hours. You will be surprised by the change of vegetation. We will visit 108 Druk Wangdgyul Chorten. We will be traveling over, Yotong la (3425m), where you can see small stupa and prayer flags, it is also similar to Dochula and Pelela passes. Descent from pass is through firs, then blue pine and bamboo, the road enter the upper parts of the Chhumey valley, which start village of Bumthang. The main town of Bumthang is one of the easier and more interesting drives in Bhutan because it passes numerous village and Goemba as it winds through the Chhumey valley. The main street leads east from here to a bridge over the Chamkharchhu. Overnight at hotels in Bumthang

Bumthang (sightseeing): Visit Jakar Dzong, according to the legend when the lamas assembled in about 1549 to select a site for a monastery a big white bird rose suddenly in the air and settled on a spur of a hill, this has interpreted as an important omen. And the hill was chosen as the site for a monastery and for Jakar Dzong (castle of white bird), Zhabdrung’s great grandfather Ngagi Wangchuk founded the monastery; the current structure was built in 1667. This Dzong also served as administrative office and religious head of Bumthang and district court also located here. Outside the main Dzong is a half round Ta Dzong (watch tower). Visit Jampa and Kurjey Lhakhang (of 8th century fame). Drive to the bridge above Kurjey and walk to Tamzhing temple where you can see original wall painting over 300 years old. Little away from the temple you will see the water mill where people still make flour from barley and wheat. Overnight at hotel

Bumthang – Nganglhakhang: (start of the trek). Our vehicle will take us to Thangbi Lhakhang where our trek will start, through the pine forest. Visit the Nganglhakhang, the Swan Temple and farmer’s house. Overnight at camp

Nganglhakhang – Ugyenchholing: Ascend gradually to Phephe-la Pass at 11,000 ft, the highest point in the trek. We will really enjoy the beautiful forest and the nature around us. Overnight at camp

Ugyenchholing – Jakar/Bumthang (end of trek): Today visit Ugyenchholing museum and Mebar Tsho (Flaming Lake) which is considered one of the most important pilgrimage spots. Legends have it that Terton Pema Lingpa had a vision of the sacred treasures that Guru Rimpoche had hidden within the lake centuries earlier. However the people of Tang and the local ruler were cynical of his claims. In order to prove his claims, Pema Lingpa held a butter lamp in his hand as he jumped into the lake. After remaining under water for a long time he re-emerged holding a chest and a scroll of paper with the butter lamp held in his hand still burning bright. Thereafter, the lake came to be known as MebarTso (the burning Lake).Over night in Bumthang.

Bumthang-Punakha: After breakfast drive towards Punakha. Upon reaching Punakha visit to Punakha Dzong, build strategically at the junction of Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to serve as religious and administrative center of the region, Punakha Dzong has played an important role in Bhutanese history. Damaged by four catastrophic fires and an earthquake, Dzong has been fully restored by 4th king. Evening hike to Chimmi Lhakhang situated on a hillock in the center of the valley. It is dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kinley, who in the late 15th century used humor, songs and outrageous behavior to dramatize his teaching and due to this he is also known as ‘divine madman’. This temple is known as the temple of fertility. Overnight at Punakha

Punakha - Paro: After breakfast drive towards Paro. Upon reaching Paro, visit Rinpung Dzong. Built in 1646 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the first spiritual and temporal ruler of Bhutan, the Dzong houses the monastic body of Paro, the office of the Dzongda (district administrative) and Thrimpon (Judge) of Paro district. While return to Paro town drive up the valley to view the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong. It was from here that the Bhutanese repelled several invading Tibetan armies during the 17th century. This is to be followed by a visit to the Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest and most scared shrines of the Kingdom. Overnight at Hotel in Paro

Paro [hike to Taktsang]: Today will also take what for many is the nightlight of Bhutan, a visit to the holy Tiger’s nest monastery. This involves a spectacular walk up to the lofty heights of the 300 year old Tiger’s nest monastery. Situated high above the Paro valley, the spectacular view from this ‘temple of Heaven’ are simply breathtaking. Please note this walk can take up to 3 hours but ponies can be provided for those who may find the walk a little too strenuous

Departure: After breakfast, drive to Paro International airport for onward destination.

The Travel Insurance policy should cover helicopter evacuation services and medical assistance. Flying to Happiness will not be liable for any kind of injury, illness or death during your visit to Bhutan either of trek or cultural tour.
